Beware of cheap food

Go into the supermarket and the fresh fruit and vegetables are stacked on the shelves.

As your eye is drawn to the root vegetables and lands on a kilogram of brown onions for $1, such a bargain that you instinctively grab a net of the firm flavour enhancers. What’s not to like.

Well, there is very little chance that the farmer can produce that kilo of onions for a few cents without mining the soil of nutrients and carbon.

Mine for long enough and the famine comes at you like a freight train.
