Golf balls always spin

This is because it is spinning and unless the axis of rotation is exactly perpendicular to the desired line of flight the ball will curve off that line either to the left or the right depending on the tilt and with more or less curve depending on both the tilt and the spin rate.

So yes, it is somewhat unlikely that the ball will spin perpendicular.

Then there is the wind and the temperature and the altitude and the fact that Joe is a 24 handicapper and has never hit the ball the same way twice in all his golfing years.
